why is a band called a sell out

why is a band called a sell out because they are on mtv?

everyone complains that there is virtually no more music on MTV, but when there is music all of a sudden that band is a sell out.

doesnt anyone still think that getting on mtv is a super amazing step for any band trying to make it in this industry?

would it still be a problem if MTV was still the same station it was 10 years ago?

when MTV sold out, is that when we abandoned it?

how did mtv sell out, you ask -- well, lets see. there are more 'reality' shows than music. there are more re-runs of america's next top model on the screen than videos. its like, if you don't have the channel mtv hits, you basically won't be seeing any videos at all. unless you want to see a 10 second clip of it on TRL! enjoy! i dont even think the TRL countdown is genuine anymore, you guys.

i consider MTV a company that sold out. they gave up valuable space and time on their network which could have been used to drum beautiful music in our ears and decided to show the hills and tila tequila instead.

HOWEVER, i made the mistake in only thinking i had mtv to rely on for music. theres always FUSE (which will probably be bought by viacom soon [if it hasnt already] haha) and MTV hits which plays non stop music videos all day and night. And Music Choice channels which plays all kinds of music as well. I don't really rely on MTV for actual MUSIC anymore. I don't tune in unless its to watch The Real World. Hey, I never said all the reality shows were 'bad'. Ha.

But, I do know there are some people out there who still have faith in MTV and look to shows like TRL or whatever. I saw Forever The Sickest Kids on MTV Hits the other day. I was proud, then I got worried 'are people calling them sell outs now?' They are a new band and they are already on mtv hits...I felt almost as proud as the first time I saw Cute Is What We Aim For on MTV Hits! HA.

My question: Who's really to blame for this whole new 'being on mtv means you are a sell out' craze? The bands, the crowd that watches MTV or a lack of faith in the company (MTV) itself?

P.S. Please don't say its because 13 year old screaming teenies will now be at all the shows making it harder for 'the original' fans to have fun....because I have heard that before. And to be honest, there were 13 year old screaming teenies at All Time Low shows WAY before they got any mention on MTV. lol. I've also read the whole 'look at what happened to panic at the disco once they got on mtv, they became so famous and blah blah blah'...All I have to say is....I'm sorry a band you liked so much became successful!

I support the art of music.
